In this episode of the Menswear Style Podcast, host Peter Brooker speaks to Richard Plowden, founder and director of Plowden & Fallow, the contemporary British fragrance and men’s grooming house creating luxury products with an eccentric modern twist.

Born in rural Shropshire and inspired by British heritage, folklore, eccentric characters and traditional craftsmanship, Plowden & Fallow takes a deliberately different approach to modern fragrance and grooming. The brand creates fine unisex fragrances and British-made shaving products using high-quality ingredients, natural essential oils and carefully selected components.

Richard explains how his background in rural Shropshire, sales and property ultimately led him to launch a niche fragrance house, despite having no formal background in perfumery. He shares the inspiration behind the brand and why he believes the fragrance and cosmetics industry has become too focused on mass production, instead championing a slower approach based on quality, craftsmanship, longevity and British manufacturing.

The conversation explores what it actually takes to create and launch a luxury fragrance, including perfume development, formulation, testing, packaging, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, branding and the often considerable costs involved. Richard reveals why some fragrances can take years to develop and shares some of the unexpected challenges involved in creating cosmetic products.

Richard also discusses the importance of working with British artisans and specialist manufacturers, from fifth-generation London boxmakers to leatherworkers and fragrance specialists, and explains how producing in smaller batches allows Plowden & Fallow to maintain its focus on quality while reducing transport miles and supporting local industry.

We also look at the brand’s expanding men’s grooming collection, including its new range of shaving products made in Sheffield, why Richard wanted to create an alternative to generic shaving products, and the challenges of developing formulations with premium natural ingredients such as sustainably sourced sandalwood essential oil.

A fascinating conversation about men’s grooming, luxury fragrance, British perfumery, sustainable fashion and beauty, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, branding and building a distinctive independent fragrance house.
