In this episode of the Menswear Style Podcast, host Peter Brooker speaks to Chris Kolbe, co-founder of HyperNatural, an innovative new menswear brand combining natural materials, modern luxury, performance and sustainability.

With more than 30 years of experience across fashion, retail and product development, Chris has worked with major names including Ralph Lauren and Urban Outfitters, as well as founding Original Penguin. He brings that experience to HyperNatural with a mission to rethink what sustainable performance clothing can be.

At the heart of HyperNatural is a proprietary high-performance fabric developed over several years of research and development. Combining premium Supima cotton with innovative materials derived from nature and waste streams, the fabric incorporates jade stone recovered from mining waste in Taiwan and chitin derived from discarded crab shells.

Chris explains how these unusual ingredients can be used to create functional benefits within the fabric, including a naturally cooling sensation and anti-odour properties, while avoiding polyester and conventional petrochemical-based performance materials.

The conversation explores the emerging world of bio-materials and why Chris believes nature can provide many of the solutions that the fashion industry has traditionally attempted to create through synthetic chemicals and plastics.

We also discuss the development process behind HyperNatural's fabric, including experimentation, working with specialist mills, testing new materials and turning laboratory concepts into a commercially viable luxury garment.

The brand launches with a tightly focused collection of premium polo shirts, available in different fits and constructions while maintaining a single fabric story. Chris explains why the company deliberately chose to do less rather than more, focusing on one category and attempting to make it exceptionally well instead of launching with a huge collection.

We also explore the details hidden inside HyperNatural's garments, including natural trims, mother-of-pearl buttons, plastic-free construction, recyclable packaging and a discreet integrated cleaning feature designed to wipe sunglasses.

Chris shares his philosophy that sustainability should not mean simply making a product “less bad.” Instead, HyperNatural aims to demonstrate that sustainable materials can create a better, more innovative and more desirable product.

The episode also examines the business philosophy behind the brand. Chris explains why he and his co-founder chose to self-fund HyperNatural, giving them greater control over growth, product development and the company's long-term direction.

Drawing on decades of experience in the fashion industry, Chris discusses the dangers of trying to do too much, the importance of simplicity and why independent brands can benefit from having a strong point of view and a highly focused product offering.

We also discuss how to communicate complex material innovation to consumers and retailers, from explaining the story behind the fabric to demonstrating tangible benefits such as comfort, cooling and odour resistance.

Chris reveals the inspiration behind HyperNatural's magpie symbol and explains how the brand sees the bird as both a representation of nature's intelligence and a slightly disruptive spirit within the fashion industry.

Looking ahead, Chris discusses the potential for HyperNatural to develop further natural performance fabrics and expand its approach into other products, while remaining focused on quality, innovation and responsible growth.

A fascinating conversation about sustainable menswear, eco-luxury, innovative textiles, bio-materials, natural performance fabrics, premium polo shirts, circular materials, fashion technology and building a new fashion brand around the possibilities of nature.
