In this episode of the Menswear Style Podcast, host Peter Brooker speaks to Guy Hills, founder of Dashing Tweeds, the London-based textile and menswear brand reinventing traditional tweed for a modern, creative and urban audience.

Guy shares the unconventional story behind Dashing Tweeds, from his beginnings as a fashion photographer to working closely with Savile Row tailors and discovering a hidden world of historic British fabrics. While photographing tailoring houses and exploring their archives, Guy became fascinated by the colourful, expressive tweeds of the past and set out to bring that spirit back into contemporary menswear.

He explains how centuries-old tailoring archives inspired him to develop new fabrics that combine traditional British weaving with modern colour, texture and functionality. One of the ideas that helped define Dashing Tweeds was incorporating reflective yarn into tweed, creating a distinctive link between heritage tailoring and contemporary urban and sportswear.

The conversation explores what tweed actually is, how it is woven, why it became so closely associated with British and Scottish country clothing, and how its original practical qualities made it ideal for hunting, shooting, fishing, cycling and other forms of outdoor wear.

Guy also explains why wool remains such a remarkable natural fibre, discussing its ability to absorb moisture, regulate comfort and perform across different conditions. We explore the evolution of tweed from heavy country cloth into lighter, more wearable fabrics suitable for modern cities, offices and everyday tailoring.

A fascinating part of the story is how Dashing Tweeds began with a single woven fabric. Guy commissioned a small Scottish mill to produce a limited run, kept a portion for himself and set out to sell the remainder. That experiment eventually led to the development of a fully fledged textile and tailoring business.

We also discuss the importance of colour in menswear and why Guy believes modern men have been conditioned to play it too safe. He explains how Dashing Tweeds encourages customers to experiment with vivid colours, unusual textures, wider silhouettes and expressive tailoring, while drawing on historical references rather than simply following contemporary trends.

Guy talks about the relationship between fashion history and modern design, including references to Savile Row archives, 1920s tailoring, 1970s menswear, Vivienne Westwood and the wider cyclical nature of men's style.

The episode also explores bespoke and made-to-measure tailoring, with Dashing Tweeds working alongside Savile Row tailors, city tailors and independent makers to turn its fabrics into distinctive suits, jackets and other garments.

Guy reveals the breadth of the business beyond menswear, including collaborations with footwear and fashion brands, architectural and interior projects, furniture, bags and work with the film industry. Dashing Tweeds fabrics have also been used by costume designers working on major film productions, particularly where distinctive fabrics and unusual visual textures are required on screen.

We also discuss the importance of educating customers about tailoring and empowering men to think of themselves as designers of their own clothes. Guy explains why bespoke clothing is not simply about buying an expensive suit, but about choosing the fabric, silhouette, details and colours that express your own personality.

Looking ahead, Guy discusses Dashing Tweeds' continuing development of new fabrics, its relationships with tailors and international agents, and the company's mission to bring greater creativity, colour and individuality back into men's tailoring.

A fascinating conversation about tweed, British tailoring, colourful menswear, heritage fabrics, bespoke suits, textile design, Scottish weaving, craftsmanship, fashion history and building an independent fashion brand.
