In this episode of the Menswear Style Podcast, host Peter Brooker speaks to Dimitar Kehayov, founder and creative director of KHV CONCEPT, an independent footwear brand creating modern luxury sneakers and shoes designed to bridge the gap between casual sportswear and classic menswear.

With a background in fashion buying, merchandising and retail, Dimitar spent years developing his knowledge of the fashion industry before launching KHV CONCEPT. Frustrated by the lack of footwear that combined the comfort and versatility of sneakers with the elegance, refinement and timeless appeal of formal shoes, he set out to create his own solution.

KHV CONCEPT is designed in London and handcrafted in Italy by a third-generation footwear manufacturer with decades of shoemaking experience. Each pair is finished through a detailed multi-step process, with particular attention paid to construction, materials, fit, durability and the small details that help the shoes retain their shape and appearance over time.

Dimitar explains why Portugal was ultimately not able to deliver the level of craftsmanship he wanted and how he found the Italian factory that became a key creative partner. He also discusses the challenges of working with traditional Italian family-run manufacturers and the importance of finding production partners who understand an emerging designer's vision.

The conversation explores Dimitar's approach to modern minimalism and why he believes minimalist footwear should be more than a plain black sneaker. He discusses slimmer, more elegant sneaker silhouettes, subtle construction details, lace arrangements, reinforced areas and ergonomic insoles designed to provide comfort and stability without compromising style.

Dimitar also reveals how he approaches footwear design despite being a self-taught designer, from sketching ideas and observing how people dress in everyday life to testing prototypes himself. Every KHV CONCEPT shoe is personally worn and assessed by Dimitar, including long walking sessions, different outfits and repeated testing to understand comfort, durability and break-in.

We also discuss luxury materials, suede, leather selection, water and stain resistance, shoe care and why longevity is such an important part of the brand's philosophy. Dimitar explains the thinking behind practical details such as separate dust bags for each shoe and thicker suede designed to help reduce creasing.

The episode also covers the realities of launching an independent footwear brand, including product development, prototyping, manufacturing costs, social media marketing, PR, influencer partnerships and the challenge of building trust around a new fashion label in a crowded market.

Looking ahead, Dimitar reveals plans to expand KHV CONCEPT into new footwear categories, including additional sneakers, boots and women's styles, while developing pop-ups and a broader collection.

A fascinating conversation about luxury footwear, Italian shoemaking, men's sneakers, minimalist design, premium materials, craftsmanship, product development and building an independent fashion brand.
